Twin Cities Terrors vs Rock City Riot

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

After putting many bouts on my calendar and subsequently missing them, I finally got to see some men’s roller derby. The TC Terrors, the all-star team for the local men’s derby league had a double-header with the Supernovas, the all-star team for the North Star Roller Girls at the Terrordome (the St. Paul Armory).

Varying opinions on whether men should be seen in derby skinz aside, men’s derby is a fair bit different than women’s. A bigger spectacle, more brute force, bigger crashes, less finesse. It was fun to watch and especially fun to see right after the women, for direct comparison, but my heart will always belong to women’s derby.

Twin Cities Junior Roller Derby

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

What happens when you take two of my favorite things, derby and kids and combine them? Only the most awesome thing ever.

Twin Cities Junior Roller Derby.

The league is currently coached by members of both the North Star Roller Girls and the Twin Cities Terrors and is open to kids ages 3-17. At 4, Princess Madd Dogg is currently the youngest skater. If there is anything more badass than a four year old derby girl, I don’t know what it is.

Need to finish editing the photos of the older kids next!

Caroline Smith and the Good Night Sleeps

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

Just one photo today while I’m in between projects. Something a little different than newborn baby loaves. :) This is Caroline Smith of Caroline Smith and the Good Night Sleeps who performed at the Turf Club last week. They’ve got a folk-pop sound, complete with banjos and harmonicas. Writing about music is definitely not my forte so I’ll just say that Caroline Smith is cute as can be and you should go see her.

You can listen to some of their music on their MySpace page.
